"It gives all the things we have been looking for in a system of physical education: relief from strain due to maladjustment, and consequent improvement in physical and mental health; ... and along with this, a general heightening of consciousness on all levels...
We cannot ask more from any system of physical education; nor, if we seriously desire to alter human beings in a desirable direction, can we as any less." (Aldous Huxley, "Ends and Means")

Do you ever experience aches and pains, including
  • backache
  • shoulder and neck pain
  • tennis elbow
  • migraines and headaches
  • RSI
  • stress and tension
  • asthma and breathing disorders
  • anxiety

The challenges and fast-changing demands of modern life can so occupy our thoughts that we forget about the most important considerations: ourselves.

Our health is our most precious possession, and yet we take it for granted until the day it fails us.

By adopting techniques to improve posture and to balance bodily function, we can offset many of the limitations to our physical and mental functioning that have so often become part of our daily life.

When the body's natural subconscious mechanisms for balance and posture are disturbed by habitual misuse or injury, the standard of our physical and mental functioning can be adversely affected.

However, the appropriate muscular activity associated with good posture is not something we can regain simply by trying harder. It involves 'automatic' reflex responses which, when working properly, support the body almost effortlessly.

By adopting the posture-improvement principles of the Alexander technique, and by learning to prevent interference with the subtle balance mechanisms that enable the body to work properly, we can significantly restore their effectiveness. Breathing and speaking become easier; movement becomes freer, lighter and more enjoyable; and fatigue and stress-related illnesses can be addressed.

Lessons in the Alexander Technique can teach us how to "relax" in the true sense, and not simply "collapse" as we so often do. Using these techniques, we can learn to release excess tension and return ourselves to a balanced resting state of appropriate tension.
